Goldberg To Wrestle Final Match Against Gunther On SNME

The last time Bill Goldberg stepped into a wrestling ring, the result was a loss to Roman Reigns at the 2022 Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. Since that time, there have been rumors of one more final match brewing, with All-Elite Wrestling reportedly making a bid for his services.

Nearly three-and-a-half years later, Goldberg has returned to professional wrestling for what will likely be his final match. His opponent will be Gunther, and the match will take place on the July 17th episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event on NBC and Peacock.

The Goldberg vs. Gunther match on SNME is the result of a run-in by Goldberg on last Monday night’s episode of RAW. During a live promo where Gunther was challenging Money In The Bank winner Seth Rollins, Goldberg’s music hit, followed by his entrance into the ring.

“A few months ago, you started something with me and my family in Atlanta, Georgia, and I am going to make sure I end it in Atlanta, Georgia…”

There has been no formal announcement that this SNME match will be Goldberg’s last, but at 58 years old, the clock is ticking on his in-ring career potential.

Gunther has served as the fall guy for talent on the rise in the past, but what good would a loss to a nearly-retired legend do for him at this juncture? Sure, Gunther will get to trade holds with a WWE Hall of Famer on national television, but as the standing WWE Heavyweight Champion, it doesn’t make sense for him to lose.

Unless… the WWE is planning a series of matches between Gunther and Goldberg. Think back to Goldberg’s run against Brock Lesnar that concluded with their match at WrestleMania 33 in 2017.

The first was a squash match where Goldberg beat Lesnar within seconds. The second and final match was a nearly five-minute affair (a marathon for Goldberg) where Lesnar regained the title.

Similar booking would make a lot of sense for Gunther. Goldberg is known for his ring rust, so a quickie would work best for their first match, with the follow-up perhaps headlining SummerSlam or Clash in Paris.

For now, there are no Gunther vs. Goldberg betting odds to reference, but they should debut soon since the match has been announced. If the bookers are thinking the same way we are, expect Goldberg to be a heavy favorite to win.
